Grammarly for Android may lose its permissions due to Android OS restrictions. If this happens, try the instructions below for your device.
Adjust the battery usage settings for the Grammarly app
- Open the Settings app on your device.
- Go to Apps or Applications.
- Find and select the Grammarly app from the list of installed apps.
- Look for Battery settings within the app information or go to Battery → Optimize battery usage.
- Change the battery optimization setting to Unrestricted or Not optimized.
If Grammarly’s battery optimization setting isn’t set to Unrestricted, this may terminate the Accessibility service to save power.
Ensure that the Grammarly app has proper Accessibility permissions
- Go to Settings on your Android device.
- Go to Accessibility settings.
- Open Installed apps.
- Look for Grammarly in the list of accessibility services.
- If Grammarly is set to “Off,” turn it on, and ensure that the Grammarly – Writing Assistant shortcut option is turned off:
Prevent your Samsung device from closing Grammarly to save memory
If too many apps are running, your Samsung device may automatically stop Grammarly in the background. To keep it running, add Grammarly to your device’s memory exclusion list:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Battery and device care → Memory.
- Tap Excluded apps.
- Add Grammarly to the list.
This ensures Grammarly is not closed when your device cleans memory automatically or when you tap Clean now.
Ensure that Power Saving mode isn’t restricting Grammarly
If Power Saving mode is enabled on your device, the Limit apps and Home screen feature can prevent Grammarly from running in the background entirely. To check this, follow these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Battery and device care → Battery → Power saving.
- If the Power Saving mode is turned on, ensure that the Limit apps and Home screen option is not selected.
- Alternatively, if you don’t need Power Saving mode at the moment, turning it off entirely is the easiest option.
Check accessibility permissions
Grammarly requires accessibility permissions to display suggestions. These can be turned off by the system, particularly after a device update.
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to Additional settings → Accessibility → Installed apps.
- Find Grammarly and ensure it is turned on.
- If prompted, tap Allow to confirm.
If tapping the toggle does nothing or shows an error, try switching your navigation style to button navigation first: Go to Settings → Display → Full screen display → Buttons, enable Grammarly’s accessibility permissions, then switch back to your preferred navigation style.
Note: Xiaomi devices may silently turn off accessibility permissions after a system update. If Grammarly disappears again after an update, return to this step first.
