Frequently Asked Questions/Ideas And Suggestions

Just a few things

Very impressed with your product, but I did notice a few things:

It doesn't seem to know how to check for incorrect use of the word "and".

For example: John purchased apples and bananas and oranges.
Should read: John purchased apples, bananas and oranges.

Also, it would be nice if the software could be told that it is scanning a creative novel, and not to treat the document like a formal paper. In such a context, things like sentence fragments and informal dialog make sense and do not need to be highlighted.

Lastly, is there any place you add/edit words to a custom dictionary?

Thanks

Mike

I find the same problem.  The software will make "suggestions" that you may need to make a change, I appreciate it and this is helpful.  Sometimes when using and informal or creative writing style I do not wish to make the changes.  There is no way to tell the software to stop counting this as a grammar error.  It it frustrating.

Dear users,

Grammarly IT department reported this issue as fixed. Would you be so kind to check?

My original comment outlined three items (none of which seem to be addressed as of today):

1. Glitch concerning misuse of "and" ie: "The sky contains clouds and stars and moons and planets." Should be corrected as "The sky contains clouds, stars, moons and planets."

2. Feature request for a "creative mode" versus an "academic mode" of review

3. Feature request for a customizable Dictionary

It has not been fixed.  If you choose not to change words that are suggested, or if you wish to use past tense verbs, etc..  You still get a low score.  You must change the things as the software suggests or the score will not improve.  There is no way to leave things unchanged and get a better score.

Subject / verb agreement for the words is and are do not check correctly a lot of the time.   Take this example   " There are a lot of Auburn CA homes for sale in today’s market."  The software insist that is be "is"  instead of "are".       "Sprinkle in the almost monthly festival calendar and the booming summer schedules and it is easy to see why people live here."  Again the software wants the word changed to "is".   It would be great if this could be adjusted.

Hi to everyone having problems with signing on to Grammerly,

When I first signed up I had problems because it wouldn't let me review corrections. It turned out even though I thought I had signed up, I had not. Be sure everything has gone through. I have been using it for about a month now to help edit a novel. In many ways it is a great tool and it definitely improves my work - well worth the price but I think it needs at least four improvements

1 - Why can't it be imported into a document instead of all the pasting

2- It changes your formatting so you have to make corrections one at a time in the original or reformat paragraphs etc.

3 - It would be much easier to work back and forth with the original if all the comments went chronologically through the manuscript - as it is you have to find the section each time to make changes

4- It is only designed for formal writing - I understand showing all the suggestions but a button on each comment for a fiction writing exclusion would be nice so that when you recheck your work you don't have to go through all the "incomplete sentences" and "contractions" over and over.

I hope this is a work in progress and that they are working at continual improvement because it is very helpful now but has the potential to be excellent.

Iatrose

I'm in the 7 day free trial period and I noticed the writing style constraints right away. I think I may still try it for at least three months. I agree with the previous comment - it's a good tool with the potential to be excellent.

I just registered and had my first text scan. It's impressive however I noted the line "I'm struggle" is not corrected to "I'm struggling". Perhaps the IT-Dept could fix it. Thanks
